Derek Miller has many accomplishments
to be proud of including his music, juno
awards and sobriety. Although Miller is busy
in the studio and creating a live DVD he still
makes time to play in his home town. He held
a concert at the community centre this past
Friday.
The band Jesus Murphy started off the night
at around 7 pm, playing to a crowd of approximately
30 people. Right after their set the
home town musician, Derek Miller took the
stage.
Miller and his band Ken Hoover (bassist) ,
and Dale “Wolfy” Harrison (drummer) put on
a great show. Miller often stopped and interacted
with the crowd, telling stories and
cracking jokes. He also relived highlights of
his career like spending time with Willie
Nelson.
He stated that when he’s on the road he tells
everyone proudly that he’s from Six Nations.
“I always tell people I’m from Six Nations,
there’s nothing like Mohawk music,” stated
Miller.
Miller also has many projects on the go and
is constantly working to better himself and his
community. He would like to work on
improving the water conditions at Six
Nations, which is comparable to that of a third
world nation.
“I’m not trying to save the world, just doing
what I can to help,” stated Miller. “The water
situation is terrible. I would like to help build
the infrastructure to help my people live comfortably.”
Miller also is currently talking to Arbor
records about the possibility of creating a studio
on the reserve. A “world class” studio, as
Miller put it, to give a place for the talented
musicians on the reserve a place to create.
Miller fans can look forward to a couple of
new releases from him in the coming months.
One will be a live DVD and the other will be
his recording from his work with Stevie Ray
Vaughan’s former band Double Trouble.
