New Credit and TransCanada working together for five years

By Erin Tully

New Credit

New Credit and TransCanada Corporation have signed a five year community-corporate agreement. The meeting, as do most at the New Credit council house, seemed to be that of old friends catching up and having lunch. Chief Brian Laforme and TransCanada’s eastern regional director Randy German signed the official agreement and also shared some laughs.

The need for the agreement was to allow TransCanada to work within New Credit’s traditional territory. It will provide jobs and business opportunities and pay New Credit $10,000 a year for the life span of the agreement.

Chief Bill Laforme said that the most important aspect of the agreement is training and opportunities for the youth. The relationship will create summer employment for students, two of which will be
hired. One student will be hired in Hamilton at one of
TransCanada’s compressor stations and the other to work in cultural research on New Credit according to
TransCanada’s aboriginal officer Coco Calderhead.
